How to Decide on a Turtle Name

After all your hardships preparing the proper housing and food for your pet turtle, now comes the most exciting part of being a pet owner: dreaming up a pet turtle name. In fact, it is the most enjoyable part of turtle keeping.

Turtles look cute as pets because of their slow movement and colors. They are adorable. But, a pet turtle without a name…Too bad. What is in a name?
A name is an identity. Like you, your pet turtle also deserves a name. By providing it one, you are giving not only an identity, but also offering a close connection to your pet turtle. It shows how you treasure and love your pet turtle. Intelligent as they are, they can easily identify their owners. Thus, they will also feel your love, care, and attention once they are given their own names.  More importantly, you can easily determine one pet from another if you call them by their turtle name (if you have more than one).

How would you name your pet turtle? For caring turtle keepers, it is not easy to name them. It takes deep thinking to come up with names. Some name their pet turtles according to their interests, physical attributes, behavior, character, or favorites. Some give them unique and very personal names.

In one of the forums on the Internet,  many great turtle names were discussed.   One woman named her eastern box turtle Rocky because when it secured itself from its shell, it looked  like a rock to her. Two people named their pet turtles according to their favorite cheese and Japanese horror movie!  One person even named his Malaysian box turtles Eenie, Meenie, Miney, and Moe.   Cute names, right?   Yes!   Bonnie and Clyde also invaded the world of naming  turtles–their owner chose their names because his two juvenile turtles were inseparable.

Naming your turtle according to an incident? Why not? Lucky was named such because this box turtle was so fortunate it escaped from death from a raving dog. The names and stories behind each name are endless…Wasabi because the owners passed by an Asian restaurant and it was colored green; Pineapple because its shell looked like a mini pineapple; Crash because it was found hurting on the roadside; Reddy because of the red stripes on its ears; Tutti and Frutti because they are two ornate box turtles; Freckles because it has white freckles on its back; and Razor because he was bought from a knife salesman.

Now is your mind filled with a variety of names for your pet turtle? What? You still have no idea? Why not name it after your girlfriend or boyfriend? Or, ‘baptize’ it with a name of your favorite Hollywood actor or cousin!   There are many suggestions provided by turtle owners on the Internet. You can also ask a member of your family, your girlfriend or boyfriend, a relative, and friends for ideas. You can also try reading books.  Make sure, though, that you select a unique and very meaningful name for your new pet turtle.   Happy naming!
